Your loved one who is living with Alzheimer’s disease or has passed away will always hold a special place in your heart. In addition to remembering him or her in your own personal way, you might want to publicly remember your loved one through AFA’s initiatives that pay tribute to people with Alzheimer’s disease. These include:
AFA Quilt to Remember
The nation’s first grand-scale quilt that pays tribute to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, family caregivers and healthcare professionals, the AFA Quilt to Remember tells the heartfelt stories of people touched by the brain disorder and shines a bright light of hope for their families. AFA encourages teens to craft a panel in honor or in memory of a loved one, or in recognition of others, such as the residents at a local care facility. Create a panel on your own or garner the support of your peers by making a panel as part of a group community service requirement or as a project with your classmates from a health or home economics class. To learn more about the AFA Quilt to Remember and how to submit a panel, visit www.alzquilt.org.
National Commemorative Candle Lighting
AFA invites teens to take part in an inspirational event that occurs each November in recognition of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Each year, individuals and groups light Candles of Care at local ceremonies nationwide to honor and remember those affected by Alzheimer's disease as part of AFA's National Commemorative Candle Lighting. You can get involved in two ways: either host a candle lighting ceremony or attend one occurring in your community. As a host, the event is a great way to engage your peers and raise awareness of the brain disorder. When you sign up to host a ceremony, we will send you a kit of marketing materials and other directions to help you easily carry out the event. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for a registration form. If you cannot host your own ceremony, you can still participate by locating a scheduled ceremony in your community at www.candlelighting.org.
AFA Book of Remembrance
Record your loved one’s name in AFA’s Book of Remembrance. The Book of Remembrance is a meaningful way to honor and remember your loved ones by sharing their name with the world and showing that people with Alzheimer’s disease are not just a number. Your loved one’s name will be posted to the Web site and read at various candle lighting ceremonies.
